Summer Blooms

This is my favorite summer part of our yard. Fifteen years ago we got together with our neighbors and we all planted purple and white crape myrtles along the back of our yards.

When we planted them, these were about 1 1/2 to 2 feet high, and now theyre over 20 feet. The white trees always bloom about a month before the purple ones.

First Hike After Irma

We came through Hurricane Irma with only minor damage that is more inconvenience than problem, so were pretty lucky. Patches and I took our first trip to our favorite hiking place since the hurricane.

Lots of small branches down, and all the moss is off the tops of trees and in piles on the ground.

There was a fair amount of standing water. The picture is of one of the main paths. This is the first time Ive seen this much water in this particular place.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Over the summer we spent a few weeks up in North Dakota taking care of my husbands parents. We took a fun day to go over to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the Western part of the state, and do the driving tour.

Theodore Roosevelts visit to the badlands was his inspiration for his ideas on conservation. Its a very stark, but beautiful, land. We saw lots of wildlife, including buffalo with their babies.

New Shoreline

This was a very dry spring in Florida, though things are getting better. I took this picture of the shoreline on one of the lakes we kayak on. Normally this area is under water, and I would be kayaking over top of the beach area.

The water should go all the way up into the bushes on the shore. The water is only a few inches deep a ways out from the beach as well. My kayak was grounded when I was taking this picture.

Kayaking

Heres another picture from one of my favorite places - the kayak. We generally go out at least once every weekend. Weve had hardly any rain this spring, and lake levels are as low as we remember seeing them. Even so,the lakes are pretty busy right now.

No one really swims in fresh water lakes here due to alligators, but there is plenty of boating. Just outside the picture frame there are fishing boats. Here in Florida April and May are some of our busiest outdoor months.
