I love to cruise and in so many ports I have encountered those very talented locals that make this wonderful objects of art.
I do believe the use Palm-tree leaves. They are very playable as I remember when I get some at Palm Sunday.
What astonished me is how fast they are in making these roses and grasshoppers. I still have them even so they dry out but keep.
The dabbawalas constitute a lunchbox delivery and return system that delivers hot lunches from homes and restaurants to people at work in India, especially in Mumbai.
The lunchboxes are picked up in the late morning, delivered predominantly using bicycles and railway trains, and returned empty in the afternoon to their wifes.In 1890 Bombay, Mahadeo Havaji Bachche started a lunch delivery service with about a hundred men.
In 1930, he informally attempted to unionize the dabbawalas. Later, a charitable trust was registered in 1956 .The service was born during the British Raj in the 1890s out of sheer necessity.
With more and more migrants of varying communities reaching the big city in those days and no fast food culture and office canteens around to calm the hunger pangs at noon, there was a lack of an effective system to ensure that office-workers could eat at lunchtime.
There was also a supply of illiterate workers, who had traveled to the cities due to agriculture not being able to support them.
With insufficient education to work as clerks in British homes, but with enough sinew and energy to undertake any hard work, the idea of delivering home-made food was born.
It was amazing to watch as the men came with their lunch boxes by different ways: Bicycles, foot, carry big bunches.
An open air laundromat in Mumbai, India.The washers, known as dhobis, work in the open to clean clothes and linens from Mumbais hotels and hospitals.
It was constructed in 1890. The word Dhobi Ghat is used all over India to refer to any place where many washers are present.
For 18 to 20 hours each day, over 7,000 people flog, scrub, dye and bleach clothes on concrete wash pens, dry them on ropes, neatly press them and transport the garments to different parts of the city.
Over 100 000 pieces of cloth are cleaned every day. Some of the wealthier dhobis have given up on manual cleaning and have now installed large mechanical washing and drying machines.
The dhobis collect clothes from all corners of the city, from Colaba to Virar.
Their biggest clients are neighbourhood laundries, garment dealers, wedding decorators and caterers, and mid-sized hotels and clubs.Dhobi Ghat garnered a Guinness Book of World Records entry under most people hand-washing clothes at a single location in 2011.
In 2013, World Records India and World Amazing Records honoured World Record Certificate to Dhobi Kalyan & Audhyogik Vikas Co – op.Home to the dhobis and their families (around 200 families), the Dhobi Ghat has seen this occupation passed down from one generation to the next.
Also known as the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, it can be viewed easily from the Mahalaxmi Railway station.This was one of our highlights in Mumbai India.
I just have uploaded a few new Iris Folding Patterns but wanted to show you all my other Passion. Crochet. I learned it in Switzerland- very early when I was about 8 years old. This what I call a Hexa-doll.
Making 4 Hexagon and fold them just so - they will come out like this. Made this one for a special friend which just became a US citizen. On a other note - I will be gone for a while since I have the fortune to go on a 24 day Cruise from Los Angeles to Singapore.

Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak tree which then regrows making cork one of the most sustainable products in the world.
The fabric is made by taking layers of cork and sealing it to a cotton fabric using silicone which is water and stain resistant and extremely durable.On our last trip to New Orleans in April we found the store by accident.
We knew about it since we saw it on TV . They sell lovely stuff although not for my budget.After a long trip I am now back making new Iris Folding patterns.
