Abbreviations
- dc = double crochet
- fpdc = front post double crochet
- bpdc = back post double crochet
- fasten off = cut the thread leaving a long tail of thread to later be woven and hidden in between stitches
Steps

Chain 4. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
- Crochet 15 dc in the ring.
- Crochet the remainder of the hat alternating with a fpdc in the next dc, then a bpdc in the next dc. Align a fpdc on top of a bpdc of the previous row. Align a bpdc on top of a fpdc of the previous row.
- Crochet 2 dc in each dc.
- Crochet 2 dc in every other dc.
- Crochet 2 dc in every third dc.
- Crochet 2 dc in every fourth dc.
- Skip the next step and proceed with the remainder of the hat if making the hat for a child.
- Crochet 2 dc in every fifth dc. This size should fit an adult.
- Crochet one dc in each dc for 14 rows.
- Crochet one dc in each dc, but decrease by a few dc to fit snugly, if needed.
- Crochet the cuff. Alternate with a fpdc in the next dc, then a bpdc in the next dc. Align a fpdc on top of a fpdc of the previous row. Align a bpdc on top of a bpdc of the previous row. Crochet 3 rows in this manner.
- Fasten off.
