To get the special effects like lightning, night scene etc crayon colors are used in combination with water color.

Steps

  1. To get the effects of lightning, first draw lines with white crayon sticks and then paint the entire paper with black water color. You will notice the white crayons appear like lightning.
  2. To get the night effect of a city, first color the windows of the building with the yellow and road with gray crayons sticks and then paint the entire paper with black water color.

Tips

  • The crayons, being oily, are not affected by the water color paint and therefore become visible even after painting the whole paper with water color.
  • Use pencil first to draw entire picture.
  • Learn how to stretch your watercolor paper on a sturdy board. It really helps in that it keeps the paper flat and you don't have to fight the buckling of the paper, which can make your paint run in ways you don't want. It also allows you to use less expensive paper (the heavier weight papers cost more). It is suggested you don't use paper that is less than 140 lb. weight.

Warnings

  • Be careful of warping paper, when wet, paper bends and can make colors run. Invest in heavier paper.
