A picavet (or picavet cross) is a self-leveling platform used to suspend a camera from a kite or balloon. While there are plenty of complex and expensive picavets available, this outlines a simple one built from recycled materials and misc. hardware parts. The goal is to suspend a digital camera face down to take video while being lifted by helium balloons. Much like Google Maps satellite view, you'll get a view looking straight down, not out across the landscape like looking out an plane window.

Steps

  1. Place your camera snugly in packaging insert from a cell phone.

  3. Make sure your camera is securely attached to your picavet. For example, you can use straps from a hiking/camping junk pile and duct tape.

Tips

  • There are several types of picavet and KAP (Kite Aerial Photography) camera rigs, each a little different.
  • Use lightweight materials
  • Kites, you want wind. Balloons, you want calm.
