Both decorative painting and tole painting rely on a pattern of basic brush strokes to paint various patterns. The S and Comma paint brush strokes are two commonly used strokes when completing painting projects. This brief over view shows the paint strokes being painted with acrylic paint.

Steps

S Stroke

  1. Hold the paint brush in your hand so the tip of the paint brush is touching the paper.
  2. Start on the very tip of the brush to begin the S stroke.

  3. Push the brush down and come up to make an S shape.

  4. Repeat the stroke by placing the brush on the tip, push down, then come back up as you paint the S stroke or shape.

  5. Attach the S strokes so they connect to make a border. The S stroke can be used to make a flower petal or leaf.
  6. Hold the flat brush in your hand and make the S stroke. The stroke will be wider and the chisel edge is used to form the stroke rather then the point of the brush.

Comma Stroke

  1. Pour a small amount of acrylic paint onto your palette or foam plate.
  2. Add a small amount of water and mix until the paint is creamy.
  3. Hold the round brush in your hand so the tip is touching the paper. Push to make the end of it and then come up on the tip of the brush to make the comma stroke.
