Lunchbox delivery in India

by Silvia Griffin

The dabbawalas constitute a lunchbox delivery and return system that delivers hot lunches from homes and restaurants to people at work in India, especially in Mumbai. The lunchboxes are picked up in the late morning, delivered predominantly using bicycles and railway trains, and returned empty in the afternoon to their wifes. In 1890 Bombay, Mahadeo Havaji Bachche started a lunch delivery service with about a hundred men. In 1930, he informally attempted to unionize the dabbawalas. Later, a charitable trust was registered in 1956 .The service was born during the British Raj in the 1890s out of sheer necessity. With more and more migrants of varying communities reaching the big city in those days and no fast food culture and office canteens around to calm the hunger pangs at noon, there was a lack of an effective system to ensure that office-workers could eat at lunchtime. There was also a supply of illiterate workers, who had traveled to the cities due to agriculture not being able to support them. With insufficient education to work as clerks in British homes, but with enough sinew and energy to undertake any hard work, the idea of delivering home-made food was born. It was amazing to watch as the men came with their lunch boxes by different ways: Bicycles, foot, carry big bunches.

Thank You for considering my creations Silvia

Barking Owls by Vicki Avcin

Well for a few weeks weve been wondering where the little yappy dogs live. Thought there must be some new people in the neighbourhood as weve not heard them before. About 3 weeks ago while sitting outside in the cool one night, we heard them. After a few nights we decided to investigate some more and tracked the bark to a tree up the front yard. Was talking to the neighbour and theyve heard it too. So next night more exploring and we found 6 owls in one of the trees. Weve always had owls in the trees around here and they have their nest/babies yearly but they are tawny frog mouth owls. So to find out what these owls are as they do not have the heart shaped face that the others do. Turns out they are Barking Owls……… who knew there was such a thing!! Barking Owls are a medium-sized hawk-owl. Hawk-owls lack the definite heart-shaped face of the tyto-owls (which include the Barn Owl, Tyto alba). There are two types of these owls, one that sounds like a small dog yapping and the other has a high pitch squeal (which they say sounds like a woman screaming). Ill take the barking yappy ones thanks! They are found in all parts of Australia except the centre although it is estimated there is only 50 pair left in Victoria and they are on the endangered list in NSW. Sadly there is a big possibility that a lot wouldve been lost in the big fires. They eat small to medium-sized mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. They breed August to October with 2 or 3 eggs/young and its about 45 days till they are out of the nest. Well put up with the yapping I think!!

This weeks promoted items are just two kits of Notelets Ive recently uploaded. Each sheet has two items to print on an A4 and cut out. Use them to write notes, as thank you notes or even birthday cards.

Illuminating the Self

by Janyce Cotterill

If you wish to highlight a medical condition which affects one person in every hundred. Where on average there is approximately 87 people diagnosed with it every day in the UK, then this art exhibition surrounding epilepsy is the way to do it. Susan Aldworth, a visual artist, and Andrew Carnie, an artist and academic, have created this installation which makes you stop and think about how epilepsy affects people and their families. It also highlights the work being done by CANDO (Controlling Abnormal Network Dynamics using Optogenetics), as they continue their development of gene therapy and a bioelectronic implant to prevent seizures in those with focal epilepsy. If you are up in the North East of England you have until May 9th to visit this free event which is on at the Hatton Gallery, situated in the grounds of Newcastle University. Susan Aldworth and others discuss the development of this project on a BBC Radio 4 programme. You can find this on Sounds BBC Radio , just search for The Algorhythms of Epilepsy. It is well worth listening to.I am leaving you with a couple of my latest designs both are on a planet and stars theme. Thank you for your interest.

Cousins by Janice McFarlane

At the weekend my daughter Stephanie and family went to visit my other daughter Kayleigh and family at RAF Benson. They go down there a few times a year as Stephanie and Kayleigh are close siblings. It was great to see them altogether, especially the children and our grand-dogs so to speak. Jack is the eldest, hes a big lad and is 11 years, Evie and Alfie are coming up to 8 in March and there is only a couple of weeks between them. Harry of course is 2 and will be 3 in May. Roxy the staffie is an old girl now and has a lovely nature, whilst Malek the greyhound is a new addition. He is a rescue dog, and also has a lovely gentle nature. It was the first time the dogs met, and they got on great. Its not very often we get a photo of them altogether, this one was taken when they all went for a walk around the camp.
