Robin Redbreast by Tina Fitch

A little robin visited me today whilst I was taking photos at RAF Lakenheath, He/She sat and fluttered round until I took notice of it.. Or seemed too anyway. I always thought a loved one from heaven wanted to let you know they were there when a robin came close. It started flying around quite a bit when I first saw it, then it seemed to get closer and closer to me.. I had a sandwich so tore a little crust off and threw to him/her.. she then came closer in fact so close I could nearly touch it. I have to admit I nearly stuck my arm out with bread in my hand but I thought better of it as others were around me..It stayed with me for sometime before flying off but still close to a little green bush and there it stayed flying on and off getting bits from the ground, probably making a nest.I just caught it before it flew away for good,, and here it is

Spirit of the Match by Janice McFarlane

As Ive wrote about a few times before, my grandson Alfie plays ice hockey for Oxfords junior stars under 9s. He has skated since he was three years old and is now coming up to the age of eight. He loves sport in general going to lots of after school clubs to play, football, tennis and recently normal hockey. His passion is ice hockey. The juniors play matches a couple of times a month, their matches arent ones to win, its about teamwork and skills etc. He often plays away at Cardiff and Swindon, but on Sunday he was playing on home turf, but not for his Oxford team; he was playing for Cardiff. As the teams are only small, if one team has more players than the other, then some are asked to play for the one lacking numbers rather than cancelling the match. At the end of the match, Alfie was awarded Spirit of the match for his teamwork and playing skills as he scored two goals. He was presented with a little trophy and he was absolutely delighted, bearing in mind he was playing against his own team.

First daffodils of the season by Anne Lever

I love the run up to spring, the snowdrops in the verges, the splash of colour from pansies and primroses. Its also the time that the supermarkets start selling bunches of daffodils. I always keep some in my house, replacing them as they go over. this is the first bunch of the season for me. It signals the promise of warmer weather, tweeting birds and longer days ahead x

Mother Nature is Clever by Vicki Avcin

Well Australia has been burning, in fact some areas still are experiencing large fires as some of the rains areas have been getting or havent fallen or been enough to extinguish. But for places where the fires were in November last year here in Queensland at Woodgate, signs of life have now begun. Our native vegetation is very heavily reliant on bushfire to regenerate. Plants like Eucalyptus, Banksias and grass trees are the first to spring back to life. They have serotinous cones (pods) or fruits that are completely sealed with resin.. The heat of the fire melts the resin allowing the seeds to become exposed. Some trees will reshoot others rely on seeds on the ground. Some rain helps but they will reshoot or grow without it. The photos are of new growth just north of where I live (Woodgate) and although the fires were hot and wiped out just about everything, it didnt kill the plants. In saying that a lot of species were burnt beyond any chance of recovering. Fire is also a great advantage to the pest vegetation too. It helps to manage weeds, some of which, such as rubber vine, giant sensitive plant and prickly acacia were once treated with herbicides, biocontrol agents or mechanical treatments. Fire kills them off as they do not like it. So among all the devastation and the losses, Mother Nature knows how to get over it and move on.

Chinese New Year! by Sue Way

I have many online friends that I have got to know through mutual interests over the years. One such friend is from Singapore and I met her on a Golden Retriever forum when I had my last 2 Goldens. She has sadly lost her 2 fur babies now as I have lost Abbey and Alfie, but we still keep in touch via Facebook and my stories about Billy. She knows about my interest in the Chinese New year, so every year she sends me a card and a little gift. This year I received a homemade card and a beautiful silk scarf. She tells me that the scarf is the batik design inspired by the Singapore girls on Singapore airlines. It is vibrant and pretty in the colour red which symbolizes good fortune and joy. http://www.craftsuprint.com/sue-way/?r=968387
