Ed025 Mandala 1
Stitching with beads
Photographs from the Community
I have used blue, pink and yellow embroidery floss threads as the colours to use to complete this mandala, a beautiful design by Emy van Schaik.
I have stitched the design onto a 13.5 x 14cm white card to give a bright crisp clean look to the finished work, and followed the recommended easy to follow stitching and beading guide.
I have used 118 different sized, different coloured and shaped glass seed beads to complete the beading part of the design.
The centre of the mandala has yellow thread, one 2mm round clear glass bead with a gold seed bead attached.
The yellow stitched petals each have pink centred tiny seed bead stitched in place using pink embroidery floss at the top point end.
The 8 gold glass seed beads in the centre are stitched with the yellow embroidery floss. The 10 flowers each have the pink star shaped centre stitched first and then the 5 clear oval faceted 5mm beads and are stitched on using the pink embroidery floss.
The blue outside swirls were stitched first before attaching the 10 main round faceted 6mm blue glass beads. Each swirl is finished with 4 tiny blue seed beads.
To complete the bead stitching part of the project I have used 1 round glass clear bead, 9 gold glass seed beads, 8 Pink centred glass seed beads, 50 oval glass faceted beads, 10 round crystal look blue glass beads and 40 tiny blue seed beads.
I photographed the completed mandala before making the card as I wanted to use small images of this completed design to make some gift cards and to use the images as embellishments.
The main ivory card measures 30 x16cm and has the centre 13cm square removed using tiny scissors and a craft knife.
I have used pale blue vellum to cover the 16x15cm outside card front, using red power tape. To the card front I have attached a sentiment, a 9cm doily and a 6cm square image of the completed mandala.
I have made a blue textured paper frame to attach to the inside of the card front and attached the 9cm doily and image of the mandala.
The sentiment is the same shape to match the sentiment on the outside. I have made an extra card to become the insert. This white insert card measures 29 x 15cm, and scored and folded.
The blue backing sheet for the insert card front measures 15 x 14 and is attached using D.S. tape. Before attaching the extra white card insert to the inside of the back of the main card, I have attached a blue6 x 14.5 cm backing sheet to the inside of the ivory card.
I have attached a white backing to the completed mandala to secure the stitching and beading before attaching this to the insert front using red power tape.
The opening page of the insert has a small image of the mandala as an embellishment and a verse I have chosen from the free verse section, which I have framed with blue.
I have completed the embellishments by attaching some peel off strips.
I really enjoyed completing this project as it turned a rainy dull day into a beautiful card for my elderly cousin.
Thank you Emy, I love this design. Please note that the card front with the vellum is shown in Photograph 338. Pamela Horton. The Whispering Platypus.
